Mesothelioma cancer can kill, but can be beaten back if diagnosed timely and treated accordingly

Mesothelioma cancer is a noxious type of cancer which affects the liner of some large cavities in the body.  The important organs like heart, abdomen, lungs etc are contained in these cavities.  They also are known as the serous cavities and serous surfaces surround these cavities.  They’re responsible for shielding the main organs from friction and erosion that occur when the organs move against each other during routine functions like respiring, heart beating and so on.  There are special cells called mesothelial cells which form the mesothelium, the major tissue layer of serous surfaces.

Basically, the cancer shows its presence in three forms - peritoneal, pericardial and pleural.  Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the peritoneum, which is the membrane that surrounds the abdomen.  Male testicles are also rarely affected by this cancer.  The second form called the pericardial mesothelioma affects the pericardium, or the lining surrounding the heart.  Pleural mesothelioma is a malignant form which attacks the lining of the lung cavity.

Mesothelioma cancer starts as a localized tumor, but rapidly spreads to the adjacent tissues and organs. The fibrous cysts and other non-cancerous growths that appeared in the serous membranes were once thought to be benign fibrous mesothelioma. In fact, these conditions do not originate in mesothelial cells, but other cells within the serous membranes. They are localized and do not spread fast.

The fact that mesothelioma is caused by previous contact with asbestos, is proved beyond doubt.  This fatal disease is diagnosed at the advanced stages.  So a total cure is unimaginable though the patient gets a survival time of one to two years after the diagnosis.  The survival time also depends on the type of the cancer.

Both Traditional and modern treatment procedures are available for taKing on mesothelioma cancer.  Traditional treatment procedures include chemotherapy, surgery and radiation.  Occasionally doctors use a combination of methods according to their discreetness.  Palliative treatment, ie, treating the symptoms, is resorted, once the tumor thinks bigger proportions. Traditional as well as modern treatment procedures are there for treating mesothelioma cancer.
